Sickness, Absence and Stress in the Workplace

Sickness, Absence and Stress in the Workplace

Synopsis

This module would be best delivered as a workshop to encourage full engagement and challenge misunderstandings. It is possible to split this module up into separate modules, or else run the module as a full course with a certificate issued at the end of it, to include topics on:

  • What is stress?
  • Different approaches for managing long-term sick leave and intermittent sick leave
  • Record keeping
  • Avoiding the pitfalls and potential claims of discrimination
  • Making the most out of occupational health (this could potentially be a module in its own right)
  • What is a “disability” and what are manager’s obligations to disabled individuals under the Equality Act 2010? (this, and the topic below on reasonable adjustments, could potentially be a module in their own right)
  • How far should employers go to provide “reasonable adjustments” to their staff?
  • Practical tips on how best to manage sickness absence in the workplace
  • When is it permissible to terminate an employee’s employment on the grounds of their ill health, disability or sickness record?
